The ‘90s are seen as a chapter in the grand theater of time, with many people insisting that this generation is filled with cultural wonders that no generation can surpass its greatness. Although youngsters are unable to live in this great era, its indomitable marks can be seen all around through music,films, fashion, sport and education. The mark laid by this era has left a deep impression in the minds of both the old generation and the new generation.
So, let us talk about this great era that will mesmerize the younger generation but will make the older generation reminisce about their childhood days.
The Music, Shows, Fashion, Sports and Academics of the 90's
The ‘90s witnessed an unparalleled surge in cultural phenomena. It was in this era that music had its second coming and the voices of these great musicians are still resounding up till today. This era produced legendary musicians like New Jack Swing with its infectious beats and Neo-soul with its introspective vibes. Then, the music landscape was carefully woven by the likes of Mary J Blige, Jodeci, New Edition, BBB, R. Kelly, among others.
Who can forget the epic Bad Boy and Death Row rivalry or the breathtaking sound of Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, UGK, and MJG who added various tastes to the hip-hop plate? This list won't be complete without talking about the lyrical prowess of Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan's sound.
When talking about the programs that are displayed in the 90’s, then legendary programs like Martin, A Different World, Def Comedy Jam, In Living Color, and Living Single will be mentioned.
In the world of sports, the one that left a lasting impression on the mind of anybody from the 90’s is Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls, which conquered everything in the NBA and turned basketball into an international sport.
The fashion of this era was so fascinating that if I were to describe the 90’s fashion in one word, I would use the word “Eclectic”. The 90’s fashion ranged from grunge to glam. The hairstyles were inspired by different sources ranging from “The Rachel” inspired by Friends to hip-hop fashion’s bold hairstyles.
The fashion industry in the 90’s was using fashion as a way of expressing oneself. How an individual dressed or the choice of hairstyle conveyed an important message regarding who the individual is.
Nostalgia is not perfect unless people born in the 90’s look back at their best childhood memories! Do you remember the weekend retreats which involve house parties where you dance to the tunes of 90’s hip hop and R&B? What about the hidden talents of your friends and families displayed as talent shows? Can you still remember the collective experience you and your friends gathered as you traveled together through teen-age years, senior year school, college, until you become old people?
I believe by now, as you reminisce about childhood, you would have smiled and a few drops of tears would have dropped from your eyes. Well, you need to, because those golden days that friendships were established and inscribed into your bodies are gone.
Yes, the 90s were special and wild so our overall goal is to not lose sight of our responsibility to the next generation. We must pay it forward. We must continue to support, motivate, and inspire the current and future generations to keep pushing the envelope with the goal of making a stronger, progressive, and peaceful society.
It is our main objective to be part of building a developed, modern, and peaceful nation. The nostalgia for ‘90s will lead the way when the torch is passed over to upcoming generations to mold their tomorrows.
